Xiao Erhei and Xiao Qin, two young people from the liberated areas, bravely pursue a love based on free choice, only to face fierce opposition from their families. Xiao Qin's mother, the vain and selfish Third Aunt, stands in their way, while the local bullies, the Jin Wang brothers, abuse their power to persecute the couple. Entangled in feudal superstition and oppressive forces, their love struggle ultimately finds resolution under the guidance of a democratic government: the wrongdoers are punished, outdated beliefs are dismantled, and the two lovers are finally united in marriage.
