Wu Boqiang, a poor overseas student, travels to Japan to pursue his studies. Because of a piece of moldy ham, he is repeatedly harassed and humiliated by his landlord and the building manager. Only after the ham is eaten by them does he unexpectedly receive "respect." Yet the cultural divide and personal degradation behind this episode ultimately force him to leave Japan.
