Born during the Spanish Civil War and raised under Franco's authoritarian regime, Vincent Abad learned early that not all authority deserves obedience. He worked as a temporary substitute doctor in Valencia and then in psychiatric hospitals and clinics in Spain, Switzerland, England, Canada, and the United States. He did this to try to understand people and their complexities. His fieldwork in the West Indies and Yucatán highlighted the importance of acknowledging cultural differences and challenging institutional indifference, leading him to found Yale University's first bilingual mental health clinic for Latino patients on the East Coast and to dedicate more than two decades to supporting veterans' mental health.
