John Bunyan (1628-1688) was an English writer and Nonconformist preacher who wrote The Pilgrim's Progress while imprisoned for unlicensed preaching. Published in 1678, the allegory recounts a Christian's journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Bunyan served as a pastor in Bedford.
