It is not merely a journey into madness, but rather how nature can bring a person back to their original state. In this novel and within this setting, the rational and the irrational merge to form a unique world that defies the laws of nature, a world the reader experiences alongside the protagonist. It is a world where the reader witnesses how the irrational can become rational for the sake of existence and survival.
Farandola, the protagonist, is an old man who lives in a remote valley in the mountains. He leads a completely wild life, isolated from humans. He hunts and eats animals, and sometimes eats dead animals swept away by blizzards. He is accompanied by a dog. One winter arrives, and heavy snowfall forces Farandola and his dog to remain indoors. With their food supplies dwindling, they spend their time squabbling over scraps, arguing about who will eat whom first. Then spring brings a new discovery that they must grapple with.
