Synopsis

Karim has spent most of his life poling a small boat across the Meghna River, and for years he has carried something he never speaks of. One night, three young men climb into his boat. He rows them out into the current because he's told to, and out there in the dark, under Riazul Hasan's orders, they are killed. Karim watches. He says nothing afterward, not because he wants to protect Riaz, but because he's afraid of what happens to a poor boatman's family when a powerful man decides they're a liability. The silence doesn't heal anything. It just sits in him, year after year, like water seeping into a hull he can't patch.

Guilt has a way of outlasting fear. Eventually Karim can't carry it alone anymore. His old friend Abdul Majid pushes him to act, and a journalist named Shafiqul Islam starts asking the kind of questions that make silence feel like its own crime. Karim goes to the authorities. He tells them what he saw on the river that night, fully aware that speaking could cost him everything he's spent his life trying to protect.

The trial puts him across the room from Riazul Hasan for the first time in years. The questioning is brutal, and at one point Karim simply says it: he was a coward once. But he's done being one. His testimony doesn't erase what happened, but it's enough. It helps put Riaz away.

Even after the verdict, Karim keeps going back to the river. He's an old man now, and the water hasn't changed, though he has. Grief, memory, and something like peace all meet him there, on the same current that once carried three boys to their deaths. What he lived through becomes something he can finally hand down, a story his children and grandchildren will carry the way he carried his silence, except this one won't weigh anything.

Darkness in the Middle of the River asks how long a person can outrun the truth, and answers, not very long. Fear can bury it. Shame can bury it deeper. But like the Meghna itself, truth keeps moving, and sooner or later, it surfaces.

Rajuan Ahmed writes quietly. His stories don't shout. They build from small moments, the kind most people overlook. Ordinary lives supply his material; he turns their everyday struggles into lasting fiction.

He started in the early nineties. His first short story, "Abhagi" (The Unfortunate Woman), was written in 1991, during his college years. During university, he turned to the visual medium. Screenwriting pulled him in. "Marriage Station," his debut television drama, took off unexpectedly and made his name in television. More dramas followed across multiple channels, and audiences embraced them.

He finished his Master's in 1999 and joined a corporation. The day job did not kill his writing. Through those years, he continued publishing short stories, essays, and columns in national dailies, earning a steady readership.

He also writes songs. His lyrics carry a distinct rhythm, and they have found a wide audience. National awards have recognized his contributions to both literature and music.

His range spans short stories, novels, poetry, television dramas, songs, and essays. He works in all of them with a distinct voice, understated but sharp, leaning on small psychological turns rather than grand declarations. His notable books include Ek Mutho Golpo, Sondeher Chhaya, Mayabi Muhurto, Shonkher Shopoth, Shobde Tumi, Alokkchhaya, Shopner Chakri, Shesh Surjer Alo, The Days of Gaza, Love of the Forest Bird, Death Break, The Shadow of War, Opekkhhar Chhaya, and O-Jol Nirbashon.

He avoids publicity. Art, he believes, holds its own weight. So he writes in silence, tracking what people leave unsaid and how time presses on the human mind.
