Zusammenfassung

Here it is in full:

Forty thousand people inside the walls. Forty soldiers on them. And one priest whose only weapon is a record he cannot bring himself to keep honestly.

In the spring of 452, the Huns come down out of Pannonia and stop at Aquileia ? the richest city of the Italian north, and the gate to everything behind it. Father Cassian is not a soldier. He is the man who writes things down: grain counted, wells tested, names entered, decisions minuted. He believes that if the record is clean, something survives even when nothing else does.

The record does not stay clean.

It begins with a warning he chooses not to enter, because entering it would have caused a panic he judged the city could not afford. It continues with four days of silence about a stair beneath the baptistery that leads to the water, because naming it would have meant admitting who already knew. It ends with a man named Orbius, sent to a wall Cassian had been told was the wrong one ? and a woman near the forum, holding a child, who asks him to carry her husband's name down to the boats. He promises. He does not ask for hers.

By the time the walls come down, Cassian has learned the thing no chronicle ever admits: that a record is made of choices, and that every choice leaves a silence exactly its own shape.

What follows is not a battle but a survival. A few hundred people push out into the lagoon ? a place with no stone, no grain, no law ? and begin driving alder piles into mud because there is nothing else to stand on. A bishop walks to his own death rather than sit down in front of people who are watching. A gravedigger learns his letters. A grain factor is exposed as a thief and then, impossibly, kept useful, because a settlement of three hundred cannot afford to throw away a man who knows how boats and ledgers work. A woman refuses to call the matter square, and is right to refuse.

Threaded through it all is a Roman girl who learned the Hunnic tongue from a hostage, and a Hunnic rider who taught her ? two people who recognized each other across a line neither was permitted to cross, and who left the other nothing but a letter and a silence.

And out in the north, along the Mincio, an old bishop and two senators ride to meet Attila at a ford, and come back, and Italy is spared ? for reasons nobody can name and everybody will claim. Plague, or famine, or an imperial army on the Danube, or the Pope's own voice inside a tent no Roman witness ever entered. An army turns the way a wave turns, one of the Huns tells that girl: a dozen things push it at once, and afterward every man standing on the shore swears he saw the one that mattered.

Cassian was standing on that shore. He does not claim to have seen it.

Spanning the siege, the flight into the marshes that would one day be Venice, and the strange unfinished peace that followed, THE SILENT TENT is the testimony of a man who set out to preserve an uncontaminated record and discovered that no such thing exists ? that the honest version of any history is the one that shows you where it has been cut.

In the end, the register survives. So does the blank in it: two lines, left empty, where a woman's name and her husband's should be. Cassian keeps the book for fifty years, and carries it through fire, water, and four changes of bishop. He never fills them in.

Mike Drake spent twenty-three years as a naval intelligence officer, serving aboard surface combatants and in joint commands across the Pacific and the Middle East. He held watches in combat information centers, briefed admirals on submarine threats, and learned to read a magnetic compass in waters where the electronic charts sometimes whispered the wrong things.

After retiring from active duty, he worked as a consultant on maritime cybersecurity and integrated bridge system vulnerabilities?a field he found more frightening than any torpedo. He lives in Virginia with his wife and two Labrador retrievers, and he still checks his heading against a brass compass whenever the weather turns bad.

Eleven Seconds is his scond novel.
