Zusammenfassung

Originally published in 1993, this unusual volume was produced almost in its entirety by Latin scholars with different social experiences in the Spanish-speaking world of their immigrant families, various degrees of proficiency in Spanish, and with plenty of common experience in the English-speaking world of academia and public life. It is also unusual because it deals with the controversial theoretical topic - the relationship of language and culture to learning, and it attempts to go beyond traditional theory to the real-life issues of practical methods of teaching and qualitative evaluation of pedagogic effectiveness. Furthermore, it uses multiple analytical levels and multiple approaches from specialized and even esoteric discourses on linguistic theory to actual demonstrations of teaching strategies and samples of lessons. The book is divided into three parts: theory, pedagogical approaches, and actual case studies of successful curriculum development and teaching effectiveness.

Barbara J. Merino was, at the time of original publication, Professor in the Division of Education and a member of the Graduate Group in Linguistics at the University of California, Davis where she also served as Head of Teacher Education. Her articles have appeared in a wide variety of journals.

Henry T. Trueba (1931-2004) was, at the time of original publication, the Dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Professor in the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Education and Policy Studies, and Anthropology. He had received many awards for his research on language minority students from the American Educational Research Association and the National Association for Bilingual Education. He has written and co-authored many books articles and reviews.

Fabian A. Samaniego, was, at the time of original publication, a Lecturer in the Department of Spanish, University of California, Davis, where he had been Coordinator of the first-year Spanish program and Supervisor of Teaching Assistants.
