Elena Garro (1916-1998) was a Mexican writer now recognized as a pioneer of magical realism. She is best known for her 1963 novel Los recuerdos del porvenir, which presents time as a malleable entity. The novel was awarded the prestigious Premio Xavier Villaurrutia and served as an important source of inspiration for authors of the 1960s Latin American "Boom." Garro is also known for her plays, her first-person account of the Spanish Civil War, and her journalism on the injustices suffered by Indigenous communities in Mexico during the 1950s and 1960s.
